WHY WE DO IT...

Litter is a pervasive problem that poses numerous negative impacts on our environment, communities, and our well-being. Litter has severe environmental consequences. Litter can leach harmful substances into the soil and water, polluting ecosystems and endangering plant and animal life. It can harm wildlife, as animals may mistake it for food or become entangled in it, leading to injury or death. Litter clogs drains and stormwater systems, contributing to flooding and water pollution. Litter also poses health and safety risks, such as sharp objects causing injuries or improperly discarded waste attracting disease-carrying pests. Overall, litter not only damages our environment but also has tangible social, economic, and health implications.

Environmental Impact

Litter, especially plastic waste, poses a significant threat to our environment. It can harm wildlife, pollute ecosystems, and contaminate water sources. By picking up litter, we help prevent it from entering our natural habitats, protecting the health and well-being of ecosystems.

Human and Animal
Health & Safety

Litter can create health and safety hazards. Broken glass, sharp objects, or hazardous materials in litter can cause injuries or accidents. Additionally, improperly discarded waste can attract pests and lead to the spread of diseases. By removing litter, we help maintain a safer and healthier environment for ourselves and wildlife.

Preventing Water Pollution

Litter that ends up in water bodies, such as rivers and oceans, can have devastating consequences. It can harm marine life, disrupt ecosystems, and contaminate water supplies. By picking up litter on land, we can prevent it from reaching and polluting our precious waterways.

Aesthetics &
Community Pride

Litter-free communities are more visually appealing and create a sense of pride among residents. When we pick up litter and adopt our block, we contribute to the overall cleanliness and beauty of our neighbourhoods, making them more welcoming and enjoyable places to live, work, and visit.

Setting a Positive Example

Picking up litter is an act of environmental stewardship. By taking responsibility for our surroundings, we set a positive example for others and encourage them to do the same. This can lead to a collective change in behaviour, creating a culture of cleanliness and responsible waste management.
