Safety First

Remember, safety is paramount when picking up litter. By following these guidelines and using common sense, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable litter clean-up experience.

Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Appropriate footwear: Walking or running shoes, or rain boots in tall grass or swampy areas.

  • Long pants: Important  when collecting in tall grass.

Use Proper Litter Collection Tools

  • ​Use Tongs to pick up litter without direct contact, especially for potentially hazardous or unhygienic items.

  • Gloves: (Optional when using tongs) Protect your hands from sharp objects, germs, and potential hazards

Be Aware of Surroundings

  • Watch for Traffic: The Litter Ridder backpack is highly visible, but always be cautious of passing vehicles to ensure your safety.

  • Avoid Hazardous Areas: Stay away from areas with potential safety hazards, such as construction sites or unstable terrain.

Practice Proper Lifting Techniques

  • Bend Your Knees: When picking up heavier or bulky items, use your leg muscles and maintain a straight back to prevent strain or injury.

  • Avoid Overexertion: Pace yourself and take breaks if needed to prevent fatigue and muscle strain.

Protect Against Hazards

  • Sharp Objects: Be cautious of sharp objects, broken glass, or sharp edges on litter items. Handle them with care. 

  • Chemicals or Unknown Substances: If you encounter potentially hazardous materials or substances, do not touch them directly. Report their presence to the appropriate authorities.

Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks

  • Stay Hydrated: Carry a water bottle and drink regularly to avoid dehydration, especially in hot weather.

  • Take Rest Breaks: Pace yourself and take regular breaks to prevent exhaustion and maintain focus.

Dispose of Collected Litter Properly

  • Follow Local Guidelines: Dispose of collected litter in designated bins or follow specific disposal instructions provided by local authorities.

Work in Groups or Inform Others

  • Buddy System: Whenever possible, work with a partner or in groups for increased safety.

  • Inform Others: Let someone know about your litter collection activities, especially if you are going to more secluded or isolated areas.
